US Admiral Matthew C. Perry's (1794–1858) arrival in 1853 forced Japan to open up its borders, ending its plan of isolationism. The federal government, underneath risk with the extra technologically Innovative Western powers, was pressured to signal a number of unequal treaties that may continue being a sticking point in to the twentieth century.
